About Me

My photo
We love to take family road trips - Dave, Susan, Morgan, Kendra and Kody when he can go too. We collect state magnets so we know what states we have been to, so we can plan the next vacation. I (Susan, mostly) am going to (try to) use this to share our family adventures. Vacations, events, and such. So needless to say, there won't be daily entries, and maybe not even monthly, but I'll post something, along with pictures, from time to time. So, if you're so inclined, check back once in a while.

Wednesday July 2

We started the day walking. We ended the day walking.
We went to see Jefferson again. This time we went and saw the exhibit below the statue. Then we headed around toward the FDR Memorial Island. Kendra got a big scratch on her arm. It was a rusty wire and I was woried until we got it washed with soap. It looks better now. When we got around the Tidal Basin and on to FDR Island.
His memorial is huge - lots of waterfalls and his statements engraved in stones. 4 statues - 2 of him,
(1 with his dog)
1 of Eleanor and one showing his Fireside chat.
We left there and found the DC War Memorial nestled in some trees. Very simple, but moving.
I wasn't sure about the Korean War memorial, but we went anyway and I'm glad. It was wonderful. Faces of soldiers engraved in stone, like ghosts.
And then the statues of them in rain ponchos.
Right next door was Lincoln. First time to see it during the day, up close. That was beautiful, still. There was an exhibit down below that was very well done.
We continued around to the Viet Nam Memorial - the wall and the statue to the women. So many names. We found Art Garcia and his brother Juan. We made rubbings for Bob and Mary, since Art was Jan's boyfriend.
Dave talked to a cop to find the right path to the memorial to the
Signers of the Declaration.
The cop seemed pleased because not many know about it. We had walked so far and so much we rewarded ouselves with Italian ice. We then kept walking and around the Eclipse. DAR Constitution Hall and Red Cross buildings were right there. A huge flag, 13 stars, 1776, hung in front of the Old Executive Offices building. That building was being renovated. We continued on and found the Sourth Lawn and Rose Garden of the White house. It is so pretty. Since our tour fell through, we had to settle for the Visitor's Center. It would have been nice to have had more time to see the movies in there, but still, the exhibits were great. Afterward we decided to go to the Aquarium. It was really neat in there. So many different kinds of fish. We ate at the Reagan Building Food Court again. Hopped on the Metro and came back to take our shoes off!
