About Me

My photo
We love to take family road trips - Dave, Susan, Morgan, Kendra and Kody when he can go too. We collect state magnets so we know what states we have been to, so we can plan the next vacation. I (Susan, mostly) am going to (try to) use this to share our family adventures. Vacations, events, and such. So needless to say, there won't be daily entries, and maybe not even monthly, but I'll post something, along with pictures, from time to time. So, if you're so inclined, check back once in a while.

Thursday July 3

We went over to Arlington today.
We thought it would be about 3 or 4 hours. We hopped on the tour bus and got off at JFK gravsite. That wasn't quite what I expected, but still very cool. He, Jackie and 2 babies are there with the eternal flame. It's on a hill overlooking the city, right at the base of Arlington House. We did see Rbt Kennedy too. At that point we decided to walk. We figured we'd see more if we walked. Up the hill we went to Arlington House - Lee's house. It was being renovated so wasn't as impressive as it could have been. We walked up hill some more. We stood to the side as a funeral went by. One of over 25 a day.
We found everything on the map - Justices Holmes, Marshall - 4 and 5 star Generals - Audie Murpy, Adm. Byrd. The memorials to Iran soldiers and the two shuttle crews; a very moving memorial to 2111 Unknown Civil War dead, the area for Confederate soldiers.
We watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns twice. I didn't realize the building there was so big. That was so impressive. We (girls) missed it, but Dave caught the end of the wreath changing. Oh, I almost forgot. As we were walking to see Taft's memorial, we came across another one - on our right nestled in some trees, overlooking Lincoln's Memorial, are Robert, Mary (his wife) and their son Abe II. We forgot they were here - and they aren't on the map. They do mention it on the tour but we felt very lucky to have come across it. If anyone else wanted to see it, they'd have to walk back, just like we did.
By the time we left, our feet and legs are exhausted - 7 hours later. Then the Metro broke down. We swapped to another train and by the time we got back to order pizza, we were either on a train or in a station for an hour and a half! We're pooped!

I tear up just thinking about Arlington. I went once with Kyra and Bill's parents to see the changing of the guard. My father could and should have been buried there...but he has sisters that wanted him in NY. I guess it's all for the best, keep the living happy, right?
